“You are my favorite sister.” Emma scooped up another bite of cake, the second they’d tasted thus far this afternoon. The salted caramel frosting smoothed across her palate in a concert of sugar. “Chef Tyler makes amazing cakes.” Being able to taste many of the chef’s creations was one of the perks of working at the Harbor Cove Hotel. Today Gabby had come in for a cake tasting, starting, as she’d said, with the biggest priority of her wedding—dessert. Emma might not be in town to help her older sister plan the wedding, but she was definitely on board to give a second opinion on cake.

“I can’t believe I’m cake tasting for my wedding to Jake,” Gabby said. “The whole thing still seems like a dream.”

Joy radiated from Gabby’s pores, as bright as the diamond on her left hand. It was impossible not to be overjoyed for her sister and Jake, two of her very favorite people. Would Emma have been like this with Luke, if they’d met and dated and done it the old-fashioned way?

No, no, no. That was a train of thought that could easily derail every plan she had. Best not to even wonder.

“I think it’s amazing that you’re marrying your best friend and one of the hottest guys in Harbor Cove,” Emma said. Jake and Gabby had been friends since childhood, with the family kind of adopting Jake over the years until it seemed as if he’d always been there. Emma had often wondered if there was something more simmering under their friendship, and when they’d fallen in love, it had seemed like the most perfect happy ending ever.

“One of the hottest guys in Harbor Cove, huh?” Gabby grinned. “Would the other one be Luke Carter?”

Emma sighed. Just thinking about him made her pulse race. “Not gonna lie, Gabs. He is hot and also very distracting.” There was no doubt Luke was handsome, with all that height, dark hair, and the muscles from working in construction. The last time she’d seen him, he had a slight tan going from being outside so much. And then there was that scruff of beard that always made her a weak woman.

Gabby laughed. “Well then, why aren’t you doing something about it, Mrs. Carter? Isn’t the fun of being married consummating the union?”

“So what do you think of the chocolate mousse cake? I love the raspberry filling. It has just the right amount of tartness to offset the chocolate.” Changing the subject was a lot better than admitting that she had thought about consummating a lot of things with Luke Carter ever since she’d woken up in a bed with him. Doing that would be the exact opposite of breaking it off with him and going her own way. And what would you call kissing him?

“I see what you’re doing,” Gabby said, waving toward herself, “and since today is all about me being the bride, I’ll let it go. So back to me. And my cake.”

Emma laughed. “Don’t you dare turn into one of those nightmare brides.
